NVUSD is developing a community-driven vision and plan. Learn more!
During the 2023-2024 school year, NVUSD is developing a long-term vision and strategic plan for what we want our school district to become by 2036.
Our vision will have four parts:
A Graduate Portrait: A clear and ambitious description of what the community wants its students to know, be, and be able to do in order to prepare them to thrive in their lives and careers
An Adult Portrait: If we want these things to be true for our graduates, what has to be true for the adults who support them? Adults are defined as anyone working in NVUSD - not just teachers but also other instructional staff and business and operations staff.
A Systems Portrait that will lead to the Graduate Portrait and Adult Portrait
A set of Core Values that outlines our beliefs that support all this work
We will also develop a strategic plan. Our Strategic Plan will be a short-term, 3-5 year action plan that sets goals and progress measures, and that identifies interdependencies and the Scope, Sequence, and Syncopation of priorities, roles, and resources.
To create the vision and plan, we are partnering with and working alongside our students, parents, staff, and the greater Napa Valley community. Working with such a large number of individuals and organizations requires a detailed approach. On this page is an overview of the major events that have taken place or are taking place.
Join us as we reimagine the future of NVUSD - for our students!

December 8 & 9 Guiding Coalition #2
The Guiding Coalition is our visioning steering committee, tasked with contributing ideas, perspectives, expertise, and experience that will inform the creation of the district’s long-term vision, through a series of three design sessions. These sessions will include explorations of the future of Napa Valley Unified School District, and the connected needs of NVUSD’s students, schools, and educators. This group will meet over three, 1.5-day meetings in October, December, and February.
January 8-21 Community Engagement Sessions
During a second series of Community Engagement Sessions between January 8 - January 21, NVUSD will host a variety of sessions for parents, students, staff and other community members. At these events, we will be sharing prototypes of the Graduate Portrait, Adult Portrait and System Portrait and ask the community for feedback. These drafts were created collaboratively by the NVUSD Strategic Vision Guiding Coalition after reviewing thousands of inputs from the community, learning from other initiatives and examples around the world, and researching the needs of people and the workplace in the future. Inputs from the community were collected through a variety of methods, including:
Inputs from over 300 students who attended the Student Summit
NVUSD parent, teacher, and special education committee meetings
Five meetings at NVUSD’s Family Resource Centers
Two large-scale Community-wide Open Houses
NVUSD staff meetings
Our online survey, and more.
January 10 Community Engagement (Zoom) Session 10 am & 6 pm
We will ask attendees (open to all) to provide feedback and prioritize the draft elements of the Graduate, Adult and System Portraits. These portraits will set NVUSD's direction and influence our plans over the next decade, so your voice is critical! Final drafts of NVUSD’s vision will be shared during a Community Installation in March 2024, more details coming soon.

August/September Needs Finding Surveys
The needs finding survey is an opportunity for our community to provide feedback as we continue to reimagine education within NVUSD.
September 12 Board Mini SessionThe Board of Trustees will meet the evening prior to the Student Summit to get a strong understanding of what the Summit will be like for the nearly 300 middle and high school students invited to attend.
September 13 Student Summit
The Student Summit will bring in 30 students from every TK-8, Middle, and High School to imagine what their school experience can look like. Through a series of activities, feedback will be compiled that will help us develop a graduate portrait. The graduate portrait for NVUSD will be based on what the community wants to be true for its students—what do students need to know, be, and be able to do--by the time they graduate.
